Nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura has asked the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) to ensure the currency in circulation can be easily used by visually impaired people.

Mwaura lamented that the current currency makes it very difficult for blind people to distinguish one denomination from another.

"As Kenya plans to introduce a new generation currency, the government should devise a way to help the visually impaired tell apart different money denominations. They have been suffering in silence but time is ripe to end their agony," the Senator said.

He spoke during the International Day of Persons with Disabilities celebrations in Nanyuki.

CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge said recently that the designs for the currency were being finalized.

This is in adherence to the 2010 Constitution which bars the country from using a national currency that depicts portraits of persons.

"We are fast tracking the release of the new currency in order to comply with the provision of the constitution," Njoroge said during a celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of the CBK.

The current currency in circulation has portraits of Kenya's first President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel Arap Moi (second) and the third Head of State Mwai Kibaki on it.
