Mr Nkaissery on Tuesday evening dared the opposition to go on with the protests saying they had turned to violence and looting spree despite a Nairobi court earlier upholding their right to peacefully protest.

But in a quick rejoinder, Ong’era has accused the government of dictatorship and warned of a possible violence if the rule of law is not respected by the government.

“I watched in disbelief as Mr Nkaissery in the company of Attorney General Githu Muigai blatantly misinterpreted the constitution. The decision to ban opposition peaceful protests was misguided and naïve and it’s upon the government to act with speed and withdraw it,” she said.

“This government is becoming autocratic and that is basically unacceptable. The rule of law must be adhered to and that is possible by respecting the courts. Our country may be subjected to violence if the government takes that route,” she added in a Wednesday’s interview.

Ms Ong’era challenged the government to ensure demonstrators are protected and take an action against those who takes advantage to loot from business people.

“Instead of making such reckless remarks, I expect them to put all mechanisms in place and provide security to the unarmed demonstrators. Those people who normally take advantage to loot should be dealt with. The right to peacefully demonstrate is enshrined in the constitution and no one can take it,” she said.
