A section of senators in Kenya have met in Thika Community hall in Kiambu County to discuss and listen to the views of traders’ and residents’ representatives on matters relating to the increase of levies and rates in the county.
Led by Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi, the residents on Monday, decried harassment by the county government of Kiambu stating it was high time for leaders from different counties to intervene in the burning issue.
Thika District Business Association representative, Sam Chege, said that even though the county has reduced the levies by 50%, it was still not enough since the increase of levies was ambiguous and the county government should stop harassing its residents.
“Even though there was a 50% decrease, the levy is still high because there was an ambiguous increase of the tax. The county should reduce the levies even further,” said Chege.
Chege said that the county government tends to increase the tax in the county yet there is no development to justify the raise and the senators should come out handy in assisting Kiambu residents.
Wamatangi said that he had called on Governor Kabogo to put the matter on hold until the situation is well audited to ensure there is transparency and accountability.
The senator said that the county government should conduct dialogue with the Kiambu leaders to discuss the issues affecting the residents and traders in the region.
He claimed Governor William Kabogo was a leader with self interest who should consider the people who elected him in the office.
Other Senators who were in attendance included Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale, Nominated Senator Paul Njoroge, West Pokot senator John Lonyangapuo among others.
