While speaking in his office, this Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka on Wednesday said the issue is one of the emerging management problems the legislators will deal with when they get back from recess next month. This closely follows the resignation of Nairobi county deputy governor Polycap Igathe last week citing mistrust from his boss Mike Sonko. The governor has found himself at a crossroad since the Constitution is silent about what should be done in the event the deputy governor seat becomes vacant. The senators will also make amendments to allow voters recall MCAs who violate the law.The changes are contained in the County Government (Amendment) Bill, 2017 sponsored by Senate Majority leader Kipchumba Murkome.Another bill that is waiting to be tabled in the House is the one seeking to prevent a deputy governor from automatically assuming the office of the governor in the event that office becomes vacant as a result of death or impeachment.“We want to look at a number of issues and gaps that are in the Constitution when the Senate convenes on February 13. Some of the issues include what happens when a deputy governor resigns,” Lusaka said.
