Senegal's Saliou Ciss will eventually not take part in World Cup tournament in Russia.
Ciss, 28, suffered a serious injury in May when he was taking part in a friendly match against Luxembourg, and now Senegal Football Federation has confirmed that the left-back has not recovered fully for the global tournament.
Adama Mbengue has been drafted in to replace Ciss. The African side will begin their World Cup journey against Poland on June 19th.
"Saliou Ciss can no longer participate in the World Cup because of a serious injury that occurred during our team's preparation," the Federation said in a statement.
Mbengue, 24, had been placed on the standby list and will now join the team in Moscow. Senegal made the replacement 24 hours before the opening game, meaning they are within FIFA rules that stipulate timing of player replacement.
Senegal, in Group G, will have to beat Japan, Poland, and Colombia if they are to progress and match their 2002 success.
They reached the quarter-finals then.
