Speaking during the launch of an operation theatre at Ahero District hospital on Sunday, Dr Lusi Ojwang said that there is no cholera detected in Nyando.

"It is ironic to have cholera in only one Sub County in the whole of Kisumu," said Dr Ojwang.

He said that Nyando has been declared an open defecation free area (ODF) and water bodies in the area will be chlorinated to avoid water borne disease.

"Continuous rainfalls cause drainage blockages and end up in river stream. During this rainy season, water bodies are normally contaminated with bacteria causing water borne diseases," he said.

He urged residents to observe cleanliness, hygiene and eating the right foods. Dr Ojwang warned against eating meat from dead animal citing that recently two people died from anthrax.

"We have closed eating facilities in Ahero that have not observed Public Health policies," said Dr Ojwang.

Kisumu County chief officer for Health said that cholera outbreaks have been rampant in counties such as Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii and Nairobi.
