[Photo/Hope NGO]Parents should educate children on dangers of engaging in risky sexual activities at tender ages, says Doors of Hope NGO project director Jacqueline Shibalira.
Shibalira said children should know that HIV/AIDS is real hence need for the entire community to join hands in sensitization and awareness creation on the epidemic.
“The war against HIV is not yet over, we as a nation envision a society free of HIV/AIDS. Doors of Hope NGO is partnering with the community towards zero-rating new infections,” said Shibalira.
Shibalira spoke during World AIDS Day commemoration at Mavoko Stadium in Machakos County on Friday.
“Machakos parents and caretakers should not shy away from discussing sex and HIV matters with their children, children should know that HIV /AIDS is real,” added Shibalira.
“Tell children about the scourge at early stages so that they see dangers of engaging in risky sexual behaviors, this will help in the prevention of new infections,” said Shibalira.
She encouraged the residents to visit VCT centres so as to know their HIV status.
Shibalira encouraged parents to be aware of their children daily activities and company as a way of making them keep off from vices which can make them get infected with HIV.
“We as an NGO are sponsoring youth activities, youths should participate in co-curriculum activities to avoid being idle prompting them to indulge in premature sex, drugs, substance abuse and other criminal activities,” added she.
“Our goal is not to leave anybody behind as sensitization to HIV/AIDS is concerned, communities around should come up and join us in the fight,” said Shibalira.
Shibalira cautioned parents against giving children lots of cash as their pocket money.
She said they should be given enough money for their daily needs to avoid being tempted to use the extra in buying drugs.
Shibalira said Doors of Hope trains youth on life skills.
“We want to partner with Machakos Government, local companies, and corporate institutions to ensure a healthy community,” said Shibalira.
