[Photo|The Standard]Outgoing Salaries and Remuneration Commission Chairperson Sarah Serem has said her next stop after exiting from SRC on 15th of this month, will be to take care of her five grandchildren.Seem, however, indicated that she is ready to take up any other job in government if it comes her way."At SRC we did our best and whatever comes, I am ready for it. I can say we achieved something in terms of doing away with the disparities that were there between the highest and the lowest paid," Serem told Citizen TV on Tuesday. She noted that without SRC, Kenya would be talking about a very different story in terms of the country's wage bill. Though the wage bill is still on the rise, Serem said this has been occasioned by the number of employees that came in with devolution. To control this she said there was a need for a policy capping the wage bill at 35% or less of the total income or 'otherwise the employer has to outsource or share what they are earning themselves'."For you to manage the wage bill you must cap the higher levels for you to manage the lower levels. I wish SRC had the mandate over the number of employees, though I would prefer we had a legal framework that focuses purely on structures within counties," she added. On job evaluation, Serem said, it was aimed at bringing down disparities where SRC hoped that some employees would gain from it. This is as she noted that disparities have been there since independence and they had difficulties in bringing down salaries of those already in jobs that were permanent and pensionable.
