The government is crafting a plan that will involve the rehabilitation of chiefs and their assistants who drink beer regularly.
Deputy President William Ruto on Tuesday said the administrators play an important roll in marketing the government agenda and there is therefore need to ensure they are sober all the time.
The DP made the remarks when he toured Mt Elgon sub county in Bungoma County to address insecurity that has rocked the area for the last one month.
About ten people have lost their lives in Mt Elgon following violent clashes resulting from land ownership wrangles.
"We will not tolerate leaders who drink and forget their responsibilities," Ruto said in Cheptais market amid applause from the crowd.
"If you know you are a chief or an assistant chief and you regularly drink, be prepared to go for rehabilitation because government can only deal with sober leaders," he added.
Ruto said the government will strive to ensure all Kenyans and their property are secured adding that trouble makers especially cattle rustlers roaming in the sub county are dealt with in accordance to the law.
He said Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i will tour the sub county to assess the security situation and determine if the area requires the deployment of more security personnel.
