A university lecturer has called on the government and stakeholders to establish community-based information centres to cater for information services in local communities. Dr Lawrence Kipkebut who teaches Information Sciences at Egerton University, Nakuru town campus said that the government, especially the county government, should partner with other stakeholders to establish libraries. Speaking when he graced the opening of a community library at Shabaab estate within Nakuru town by a local youth group, the said information centres like museums and record centres will offer leisure and reading services to local community members to stir up social-economic development. He noted that the current information centres were not adequate and accessible to many residents and visitors in the town urging stakeholders to consider setting up more information resource centres. “We are aware of the roles community libraries and other information centres play in socio-economic development. It is therefore important that the government and other stakeholders consider establishing more facilities on a community basis,” he said. He added: “Our children can get busy and focused in life and education if they get access to libraries. We also need such centres to provide leisure and recreation facilities.” The lecturer stated that the setting up of information centres will go a long way in spurring community development.
