Nakuru county environmentalists now seek to have free public toilets built in the county.
Speaking to the press in Nakuru, they said that this was the only way to reduce the increased cases of environmental pollution in the county.
“When one is charged even a small amount to ease himself he will resort to the bush which is absolutely free. This will therefore derail any effort to curb the issue of flying toilets or stinking water pipes in the county,” said Kio Kinuthia, an environmentalist.
Kio cited that free public toilets should be a personal initiative of the county government.
His views were echoed by Victor Ngatia, who pointed out that Machakos county has 80 free public toilets.
“This is the only way we can ensure cleanliness in our county. They should employ people who will be cleaning them on a regular basis. It’s cruel for someone to be denied a natural need just because he cannot afford it,” he said.
James Mungai said that the acceptance of this move by the county will create a great job opportunity for the youths in the area.
“Many will be employed to clean the toilets and also ensure the standards are maintained. This will enable our county to regain its original status as the cleanest county in Africa,” he said.
