Kiambu county government has initiated plans to clear human activities around Kamae forest in Thika sub-county in order to curb the rising cases of illegal activities around the forest.
Addressing residents on Sunday in Thika, Kiambu environment CeC Esther Njuguna confirmed the relocation of those living around the forest, a situation she described as illegal since destructive human activities have been going on in the area.
“We are committed to clear all human activities taking place in and around all our forests and water resources. Those living around Kamae forest will be relocated soon, through a partnership between the county and the national government,” she said.
Njuguna also warned residents against channelling effluents to the rivers, saying strict rules have been imposed and those found flouting them will be held accountable.
“There have been rising cases of irresponsible dumping and channelling of effluents into rivers. River Kiu has been hard hit and we are out to stop that, she said.
She added: “Cases of outbreaks of waterborne diseases have been on the rise due to illegal activities around our forests and dumping in rivers. The county government has purchased vehicles to collect waste and those found dumping waste irresponsibly will be brought to book.
Meanwhile, the CeC also revealed that the county government of Kiambu is planning to invest in upgrading public facilities including stadiums in the county.
“Plans are already in place to upgrade Thika stadium. The construction of the stadium will kick off once the rains subside. We have also budgeted for various projects to salvage our forests and water resources across the county and the works will start soon,” she said.
