A report released by the Mombasa County government has revealed that at least seven persons have died of cholera following the recent outbreak. The report contradicts reports by Mombasa Health CeC Hazel Koitaba who said only two cases of deaths have been reported in the county. The report, which was on Tuesday presented by Kibwana Baya, the chairman of the Committee on Health also revealed that 116 suspected cases were treated and 34 confirmed to have cholera. The report was tabled in a session chaired by Deputy Speaker and Port Reitz MCA Fadhil Makarani.Koitaba had earlier said that a mother and her child had died following the outbreak of the diseases. She also said that 25 persons from different parts of the county have been hospitalised over the disease. The report was released after nominated MCA Moses Oindo asked the county government to shed more light on the cholera outbreak status, the Standard has reported. According to the report, the county government has since directed all companies in the bottling sector to ensure that they meet the required hygiene standards to continue their operations in the region."To rid the county of unscrupulous water bottlers, all companies in the sector are directed to immediately present themselves and deposit their Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) certification with the Department of Health, failure to which punitive action will be taken against them,” read the report in part.
