The world cup is on its tour of the world before the tournament kicks off in June in Russia.
The trophy arrived in Kenya on Monday and fans had a chance to view the coveted gold trophy at KICC.
As it makes its tour, there are several facts about it that not many know. Here are some of them.
1. The trophy is hollow
According to experts, a solid gold World Cup would weigh anywhere between 60-70 kgs, which will almost be impossible for footballers to lift.So the trophy was made in such a way that it is hollow to ease carrying it around and even after winning.
2. You don't get to keep it
The winner of the tournament never get to keep the trophy, it is presented during the celebrations and returned afterwards. However, the winning team gets a replica of the trophy to keep.
3. The replica is just gold-plated
The gold-plated Fifa World Cup winners' trophies are even less impressive than the (probably) hollow real thing.
5. The original has been stolen
The trophy was stolen for the second time in 1983 in Rio de Janiero and is believed to have been melted down and sold.
6. it’s running out of space
Its estimated there is only enough space for – at most – four more winning teams' names to be engraved on the base of the trophy.
This means it will need to be replaced again after the tournament's 100-year anniversary in 2030.
7. it’s not a real cup
You can't even drink out of it or anything. A cup is supposed to be bowl-shaped. The World Cup trophy's just a lump, a hollow lump.
