Seven girls said to have been prepared for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Tangulbei in Tiaty sub-county have been rescued as thousands in North Rift region still face the cut.
The girls are presently being held at Tangulbei boarding primary school under the school head teacher Musa Terer's watch.
"We talked to them and they reported that their parents and brothers threatened to kill them if they refused to join other girls undergoing the cut in the bush," the headmaster told the press on Monday.
The young girls are said to have fled their villages in Kabalabata, Karoiwo and Kakaryakales on Sunday after being informed that the woman circumcising them was ready to perform the illegal act.
Terer said he was forced to place the girls aged between nine and 12 in class one and two due to their level of illiteracy. They were supposed to be married off after the cut, he said.
Tiaty deputy county commissioner Reuben Ratemo told the girls their safety was guaranteed.
"Despite threats by the parents to storm the school to take away their children, we have alerted our officers to arrest anybody coming to claim any of the minors," Ratemo told a local Radio station.
Tangulbei Woman Network Chairperson Mary Kuket said thousands of girls are under threat to the cut this season when girls get married off in exchange for cattle.
