A seven-year old class seven pupil at Matutu in Kitutu Masaba drowned in a dam, and subsequently succumbed to injuries sustained at Keroka District hospital.
According to an eye witnesses, Master Kevin Ongeri, 12, is said to have been grazing their close to the dam, before he accidentally slipped and drowned.
Efforts to rescue him bore no fruits since they had to wait for a diver from Gesima to rescue him and unfortunately, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
“He was grazing cows around the dam and slipped into it without help. Some of us who were around were unable to dive and help and perhaps that is why he died,” lamented Elvis Orina, an eye witness.
“In fact, we had to wait for an experienced diver from the neighborhood to rescue him. It took about an hour for him to arrive and by that time, the deceased was unconscious and later on died,” he added.
Area chief Wycliffe Nyabando confirmed the incident and promised to take action against the owner of the dam for negligence, since he had not fenced his premises.
“It is indeed sad that we lose lives through incidents that can be controlled. The owner must take responsibility and I want to assure him that we will not go scot free. He should have fenced his premises to avert such tragedies,” he said.
