Integrated Education for Life research findings indicated that parents in the sub county were cautious of sexual matters and had reservations in teaching their children about contraceptives.

Speaking in Kamwangi social hall during a back to school female seminar usually held thrice in a year, the NGO director Dorothy Wandia said that parents were fearful of exposing their children to risky sexual behaviour once they told them about contraceptives.

“Parents here have gone by the notion that speaking on sex matters with their children is a taboo which they think their children can get easily lured to sexual intercourses once they are informed,” she revealed.

Wandia revealed that the organization would start to include men in their training, a breakaway from their past when they used to offer guidance to females only.

“We also need to have a sex-related topic to be started in our schools especially as we incept a new curriculum. This way, more will be exposed to our children leaving them to make informed decisions on sex. We urge the government to consider employing specific sex-topical teachers for if we don’t arrest the situation of leaving the ordeal to parents, we will be unable to undo the effects of not informing children,” she added.
