On Friday 13th, the ministry of health published a report in one of the dailies that abortion is on the rise especially among school girls.
They said that the rise in abortion is due to unplanned pregnancies because many of these schools know so little about reproductive health.
The ministry of health went ahead to suggest that, as a measure of curbing abortion and maternal health, sex education should be introduced in the school curriculum.
While the suggestion is good, care should be taken to make sure the students are comfortable and free enough to open up about their problems.
A student will not easily open up to his or her everyday teacher.
She or he would rather open up to a health official.
I think the sex education classes, if the ministry of education, science and technology will adopt them, should be conducted by health officials who have in-depth knowledge on reproductive health.
Training teachers to tackle sex classes should only be done for back-up purposes.
