A sex worker has been remanded in police custody for neglecting her two children and subjecting them to danger by leaving them alone in the house during day and night hours. Nakuru court heard that Leah Wangare, 29, who lives at Langalanga estate in Nakuru town, has been leaving her two children aged 3 and 7 in the house alone after closing the door. The situation, according to the prosecution, denied the children their basic rights of parental care and freedom of movement and also subjected them to danger including an outbreak of fire or other accidents. Chief Resident Magistrate Patrick Mwaniki heard that the accused was arrested by police after neighbours reported the matter to Bondeni police station on December 8. The court heard that police laid an ambush and arrested the woman as she left her house at 7pm after locking the door to her house after sending the children to bed. The prosecution added that police ordered her to open the door and found the children lying on a bed. The woman had told police that she was going away on a night shift duty at a hotel she worked for but investigations revealed that she was a sex worker. She was remanded until the case is mentioned on December 29, with the court ordering that the children be accommodated at the Nakuru Children’s home.
