Land disputes involving a school in Kinango have caused delays in the construction works for the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

Kinango Member of Parliament Benjamin Tayari says plans for further construction have been put on hold until disputes regarding the ownership of Mwamdudu primary school land  are resolved.

The primary school is among nine other schools in Kwale to have been affected by SGR construction while efforts to compensate the schools have failed.

According to reports, the government is looking to have the school relocated; however, Kinango is yet to come to a consensus.

The private developer has already laid claim to the land and the issue is currently in court.

"I will follow up the issue with National Land Commission and the Lands ministry to make sure the land is returned to the owner. While we do that, no construction will proceed," Tayari said as reported by The Star.

Mwamdudu Primary School chairman Abubakar admitted that the school does not have a title deed for the land.

"Although this school land belongs to our forefathers, we have no title deed to claim it. We have had no peace since 2009 when private developers invaded it," Mwero said. The land dispute has affected many students and the school is keen on settling the matter as soon as possible.
