Passengers planning to travel from Nairobi to Mombasa or vice versa using the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train on August 8 will not enjoy the service because the Madaraka Express train won’t operate.
The train which currently transports 2,700 passengers daily plans to halt its operations to allow staff break off and exercise their democratic right of voting.“We shall have the first schedule interruption on the service on August 8, 2017 due to the national elections,” said Kenya Railways Managing Director Atanas Maina.“It is imperative that staff and service providers of the Madaraka Express exercise their democratic voting rights.”Kenyans will go to the polls on August 8 to elect president, governors, senators, woman representatives, MPs and MCAs.The SGR train has become popular among Kenyans because of its low promotional prices and fast rides.President Uhuru Kenyatta during the train’s launch encouraged Kenyans to use it while traveling to either Nairobi or Mombasa and boost the tourism sector.
