The Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) James Macharia has warned the public that anyone found destroying the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) is sabotaging the economy and risks being charged.
Mr. Macharia said those who will be caught vandalizing the railway line would be sentenced to death.
Speaking during the launch of the second service of the Madaraka Express on Wednesday, Mr. Macharia urged the public to be proud and dedicated to conserving our property and national heritage.
“We have noted that there has been a rise in illegal activities such as vandalism along the SGR line. Let me state that anyone found culpable of the destruction of any section of the infrastructure will face the full extent of the law,” said Mr. Macharia.
During the launch of the project in June this year, President Uhuru Kenyatta warned that the vandals were equal to economic saboteurs and should be given the death penalty.
CS Macharia also warned individuals who acquire the SCR tickets and seek to extort Kenyans through higher prices saying they will face arrest and prosecution.
“We would like to caution all those seeking to take advantage of Kenyans by acquiring and hoarding tickets that the government will take additional measures including arrest and prosecution of those seeking to divert and sell tickets at a higher price,” added the CS.
Nairobi City residents traveling to neighboring counties will enjoy cheaper fares after the launch of the inter-county train service.
