The construction of Standard Gauge Railway in Syokimau in Machakos county has been paralyzed after workers literally downed tools. The workers have complained of mistreatment from their employers.

They said that the Chinese men who supervise them are using vulgar language while addressing them. They added that their bosses fail to pay them on time making life difficult for them.

“These Chinese are very hostile, they insult even when we have done nothing at all, salary they delay to pay us. How do they want us to survive especially these days when the cost of live is very high” one of the workers angrily said.

The workers vowed not to go back to work until their grievances are addressed. The company in charge of the railway construction has not made any communication. Recently Chinese have been on the limelight for mistreating black men and even operating businesses illegally in the country.

In past few weeks a Chinese restaurant was shutdown in Nairobi after the management was accused of racism. The SGR is one of the Kenyas' multi-billion Vision 2030 flagship project and is expected to ease transportation of bulky goods across East Africa.
