A Sh10 million consignment of government subsidised NCPB fertiliser has been impounded in Ngoingwa Estate,Thika West sub-county.
According to NCPB Nairobi-Eastern Regional Manager Dennis Mutai who spoke to the press on Sunday, the consignment was impounded following a police tip-off.
"Yesterday CID officers from Nairobi raided a godown in a residential plot in Ngoingwa and confiscated NCPB fertiliser from a private household," said Mutai.
"We will be storing the bags at our Thika stores as police exhibits," he added. Mutai said that the fertiliser was being repackaged from NCPB branded bags into 'Chapa Meli' and 'Falcon' branded bags when they found out.
"The police were able to arrest eight suspects who were involved in this illegal repackaging and they are already helping them with investigations," said Mutai.
The manager, however, said that they were yet to establish the source of the 3,000 bags which consisted of NPK, CAN and DAP fertilisers.
Mutai warned private businessmen against taking advantage of the subsidized fertiliser to undermine poor farmers for profits.
He at the same time asked farmers to be wary of where they buy the subsidised NCPB fertiliser saying that they should only buy from a trusted NCPB distributor.
