Orphans and students from poor backgrounds in Mwala sub-county have received Sh1.2 million shillings as support to pay their school fees.
The Monday event in Chumbuni Secondary School was presided over by Machakos county deputy governor Bernard Kiala.
Speaking to the congregation and well-wishers during the fundraising ceremony, Kiala encouraged leaders to be supportive of the needy as they are intelligent in academics.
"Any leader who cares about the young people knows that education plays the most important role in the development and hence should come out to support academically sharp but orphaned or financially needy students," said Kiala.
According to the John Kasivu, chairman of the Foundation providing the needy students sponsorship, the fundraising followed lack of school fees by many orphans in Mwala sub-county.
The funds are to benefit both Secondary and Primary needy children. However, Kiala didn't forget to highlight the problems facing the county government, mainly the stagnant projects.
"Many hospital constructions and rehabilitation were started with a lot of finances but have remained stagnant, and some hospitals were distributed with medicines but without enough medical personnel. Our governor should form a committee to check on the problems," said Kiala
