Kiambu County Executive Member for Environment Mrs Esther Njuguna has warned Kiambu County residents against the habit of dumping litter carelessly that they risked being and finednot less than Sh 150,000.
Speaking during a cleanup exercise organized by the County Government in partnership with Thika Motor Dealers in Thika town Njuguna said that the County Government has invested heavily in ensuring that garbage management is a shared responsibility between the government and members of the public
Ms Njuguna added that already dustbins and designated sites of dumping have been provided in various estates.
The CEC said that the County government has already partnered with the judiciary in the area to ensure that deterrent measures are taken against those defying the Do not Dump signs erected in various estates and market places adding that already enforcement officers are out in the field monitoring the success of the order.
She explained that the cleanup exercise that involved the County employees, senior Government Officials and employees of the Thika Motor Dealers was set to set an example to the residents on how the towns should be kept clean and also officially launch surveillance.
Njuguna pointed out that youth SACCOS out to collect garbage in the estates are already operating at a fee with each homestead being issued with 8 black paper bags to store their garbage to be picked twice a week by county trucks.
“It’s therefore up to you if you are caught littering and taken to court as the County government has assured that measures are provided to ensure that careless garbage dumping is stopped” she said.
Several tones of garbage were collected from various estates and government institutions with DO NOT DUMP HERE signs being erected in all the previous dumping points.
