The seizure would have lost the Authority more than Sh75 million.

Port Operations chief manager Joseph Kaguru said the disguised items in 21 containers had been concealed as cold rooms and flasks, while those in the three others were sachets of Hilwa branded powdered milk and tins disguised as flasks and sewing machines.

The items were detected after the containers were passed through a scanner.

Kaguru said the goods were being transported by fake horticultural firms, and thus they are yet to arrest anyone.

"Most of the goods were destined for Nairobi but some of the powdered milk was to be transported to Uganda," he said as quoted by The Star.

The Port Operations boss said they became suspicious after the containers remained unclaimed two weeks after reaching the port.

He said that investigations with other government agencies into smuggling syndicates will continue and the culprits will be prosecuted.
