The government has received a Sh15.5 billion loan to finance electricity connectivity in arid and semi-arid counties.
According to the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum PS, Joseph Njoroge, the funds acquired from the World Bank will be used to purchase solar-powered mini-grids that will connect households to electricity.
"We have identified 14 counties where these solar-powered mini-grids will be installed to 690,000 households. We will first begin with Garissa, Moyale and West Pokot counties before going to the others," Njoroge said, as quoted by The Standard.
The PS was speaking in Nairobi during a ceremony to announce the partnership with the Bretton Woods Institution.
Njoroge said so far, 6.2 million households have been connected to the national grid through the Last Mile Connectivity Programme.
