The Kisumu County Assembly is undergoing renovation.
The exercise that aims at giving the building a new look will cost Sh23 million.
The County Assembly members have in the meantime taken their sessions to the Kisumu City Hall that hosts the defunct Kisumu Municipal Authority.
Speaking to the press on Friday at the assembly ground, former Majority Leader Samuel Ong’ou said the duration of the renovation might take a little longer.
“We expect to resume sittings in the Assembly any time next year. The City Hall still gives us room to continue discharging our duties,” he said.
The renovation will also entail putting up new communication gadgets that will cost Sh8 million while the remaining amount will go towards rehabilitating the building.
The building of a new Assembly was shelved last year even after funds had been allocated for the same.
Politics and vested interests stalled the project that would have been near complete by now.
Ong’ou said the assembly deserves a new building which is spacious to accommodate all the 35 elected MCAs and nominated MCAs.
He said most County Assemblies across the country have come up with magnificent buildings and wondered why Kisumu County Assembly cannot be constructed to such status.
“Kisumu is a city and we should have enough space for parking, and other amenities,” he said.
