Residents of Ngong town will soon have a breath of fresh air after the local smelly dumpsite is relocated and the waste treated scientifically for economic gains.
Environment PS Charles Sunkuli led a team of stakeholders to the proposed alternative of Kibiku landfill to inspect the site where solid waste will be sorted and recycled in the outskirts of Ngong town.
“The Kajiado County Government is partnering with the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (IADC) under the leadership of the Environment Ministry to put up the new facility at an estimated cost of Sh2 billion,” he said as quoted by mygov.go.ke.
Kajiado County Executive member for Land and Environment MR Ali Letura confirmed that through negotiations under the National Treasury the deal for solid waste management with IADC had been concluded.
Speaking after touring the area, Sunkuli said that an Environment impact Assessment was currently being undertaken and would be expedited so that once completed, the decommissioning of the old dumpsite will start and the new 20-acre landfill site developed.
The stakeholders visited Ngong dumpsite accompanied by a team from IADC led by its head Teresa Savaneila, Director General of National Environment Management Authority (Nema) Prof Geoffrey Wahungu, Father John Kariuki of Ngong Catholic Diocese and Ngong Member of the County Assembly Paul Supet.
Prof Wahungu allayed fears by aviation the fraternity that the new land fill will distract air vessels around Ngong Hills.
He said Nema had spearheaded the development of other landfills in Kibarani, Mombasa, Ruai in Nairobi and Muhororni in Kisumu and there was no cause for alarm since all solid waste will be sorted out scientifically and recycling done to some of the garbage.
The Italian envoy told the meeting that her agency was looking forward to the completion of the project which was expected to have a big social-economic impact on the local people.
