The medical superintendent at the Likoni sub-county hospital, Dr Ali Juma, said the new facility is set to ease congestion at the Coast General Hospital.

Dr Juma said the modern facility will help expectant mothers from Likoni and its environs who are forced to travel long distances to access delivery services.

He said that most mothers in the area are forced to deliver at home as women living in Kwale county and Likoni area have to cross the ever congested Likoni ferry to seek deliveries and prenatal specialized services at the Coast general hospital.

Dr Juma said the facility will improve access and quality of health services to expectant mothers in Likoni and Kwale adding that they expect the mortality rate within Mombasa to reduce.

“We foresee that the Likoni maternity wing will reduce death related births significantly in both Likoni and Kwale in general.”

”The closest facilities for maternal theater facilities for residents were only in Msambweni and Mombasa town which are both significantly far from here,” Dr Juma said as quoted by Baraka FM.

The construction of the maternity wing started in 2016 by the Mombasa county government in conjunction with mining company Base titanium and Italian department of foreign aid.

The mining company contributed Sh20 million towards construction of the facility with a capacity of 18 beds which were donated by the mining company.
