The controversial Sh4.2 billion Lake Basin mall in Kisumu is scheduled for official opening on February 28.This is after the National Treasury came to its rescue, following a more than Sh4 billion auction loan.The mall which is set to be the fifth mall in Kisumu has been at the center of controversy with politicians and other government organs raising concerns about it. The mall, the biggest in Western Kenya region has been marred by controversy following a loan that was borrowed for its construction.A spot check at the five-floored mall showed tenants had started occupying space with Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA) Ag MD Dr Evans Atera, saying they were putting the final touches before officially opening the mall in February.Atera acknowledged that tenants had started occupying the mall located at Mamboleo."Several tenants whom we have already leased some of the shops to have already started working on their shops. Almost everything is ready and now we are waiting for next month,” said Atera, as quoted by the Standard. The mall has been projected to raise about Sh230 million annually.
