The national government has allocated over Sh500 million towards the renovation of Mombasa's Fort Jesus Museum, in a bid to boost tourism in the region.
The museum has over the years earned the country millions in terms of foreign exchange, and its renovation will have a great impact on the tourism sector in the region.
Addressing journalists in Mombasa on Wednesday, Sports CS Hassan Wario said the funds will be used in the construction of a sea wall barrier at the museum in order to prevent the erosion of the fort’s wall.
Wario noted that the contractor of the project is likely to embark on the construction before the end of February.
He also said the wall will prevent the fast rising sea water level from eroding the museum's stands.
Wario further said that the project is likely to cost the government up to Sh1 billion before it is completed.
“We will probably give out a contract next week so that the process can kick off, the Museum is in a bad state and it’s likely to cost approximately 1 billion for it to be fully refurbished,” he said.
The CS further said that the national government has plans to install a digital revenue collection system at the fort to ensure easy and efficient tax collection.
