The national government in colloboration with the European Union (EU) has set aside Sh7.4 billion to oversee the expansion of the Eldoret-Malaba road, Uasin Gishu Roads Executive Gideon Birir has disclosed.
The Excutive told reporters at his office on Friday that the expansion of the Eldoret-Mala road wille ease traffic congestion.
He said that the consturction works will commence immidiately and that much of materials to be used have already been purchased.
The Executive added that the expansion will boost regional trade noting that the road connects Kenya with most East African countries.
“Plans are in place to start the expansion of the Eldoret-Malaba highway in a bid to ease transport,” said Birir.
The Excutive stated that the expansion will also create job opportunities for the youth who will be contracted to help the contractors.
Mr Birir also said that street lights and CCTV cameras will be installed along the highway to address crime. He stated that long distance truck drivers have most of the time attacked by armed robbers saying that with the installation of security lights the cases will reduce.
Birir further announced that the repair and renovation of the Timboroa- Eldoret road will start soon. “The county has set aside Sh3.2 million to repair the Timboroa-Eldoret stretch,” he added.
The Executive said the government is keen to improve roads and other infrastructures across the county.
