The Mombasa Law Court has failed to account for more than Sh8 million set aside to pay ten former members of MV Ponmudi’s crew.

High Court Judge Mary Kasango ordered for the sale of the Ship in July 2012, to raise money to pay the crew members.

MV Ponmudi, which was transporting communication equipment to Somali, broke down following mechanical problems forcing the crew to tow it back to the country.

The crew members filed a case in 2011 demanding for compensation for the three months they had spend at sea.

Kraal Scrap Metal Enterprises in September 2012 bought the ship at Sh21 million, following the court directive.

Thereafter, the money was deposited at the court's Admiralty Marshal Account only for officials to claim that Sh8 was missing.

According to The Star, only Sh17 million had been deposited in the account by June this year.

Mombasa Law Courts deputy registrar Ivy Wasike has promised to investigate the matter.

“Up to now, the whereabouts of the money is not known, even as the judiciary maintains they will investigate,” said Kanyi as quoted by The Star.

The crew members include Titus Kilonzi, Felix Kimweli, Polycarp Lemayan, Hamisi Mwenyedi, Veronica Kanyi and Edwin Biwot.
