Mombasa governor aspirant Suleiman Shahbal called for the appointment of new officials, who will ensure elections in the county are conducted in a free and fair manner.

Addressing journalists on Thursday at Tononoka grounds in Mombasa, Shahbal said the move is aimed at curbing cases of election irregularities in the coastal city.

"In 2013, IEBC reshuffled its officials across the country but unfortunately, that was not the case in Mombasa. This time round we will not accept rigging. We are aware new commissioners will be recruited, and we won't accept last year's episode to repeat itself," said Shahbal.

His sentiments were echoed by veteran politician Ramadhan Kajembe, who has declared interest in the Mombasa senator seat.

Shahbal moved to court to challenge the 2013 Mombasa gubernatorial results, after losing to the incumbent, Governor Hassan Joho.
