Mombasa gubernatorial aspirant Suleiman Shahbal has criticised Governor Hassan Joho’s government over the county’s decision to demolish business stalls in Mombasa town and its environs.

Joho two three weeks ago ordered for the destruction of kiosks is specific areas of the county to pave way for the construction of drainage tunnels following heavy floods that hit the town.

“We are disturbed by the random destruction on small traders’ stalls at Buxton stage. This attack on midnight was unnecessary and inappropriate. These small traders deserve support and if the county government cannot assist them, then it ought not to destroy their premises from where they earn their living,” Shahbal said on Tuesday after meeting groups of youth.

“I promise after August 8, to assist traders by creating opportunities for their businesses to thrive, empower them and most importantly reduce the charges on licenses and permits.”

Mombasa town at the onset of rains which have since subsided was hit by heavy floods forcing the county government to re-think its strategy in controlling running rain water.

The county government after the floods displaced over 1,000 people ordered for the destruction of all structures built along waterways to allow for the opening of drainage tunnels.

Joho at the time said the county government will look for alternative space for the affected traders to do business. He told his political opponents who were against the stalls’ destruction to come up with alternative solutions other than criticize his decisions.
