Residents of Shauri Yako Estate in Eldoret have appealed to the county government to beef up security in the area.

This follows numerous  robbery with violence incidents in the area.

They claim they are being attacked by unknown people believed to be youths at around 5am and around 7pm in the evening.

The so called robbers of the area are reported to be hitting people using hammers, stones and glass bottles and steal everything away from the people passing by especially women going to carry out their daily businesses including grocery to an extent of taking away their shoes and injuring their heads.

“We don’t understand what is going on lately because these people involved in the crime are very young and maybe they are doing this for survival. We are scared because our lives are in danger,” said Joyce Adhiambo.

Speaking from his bed, Austin Angi said he was repeatedly hit at the back and up his neck by two people that he could not recognise.

“The two got me by surprise as I tried crossing the road to a point where I could easily board a matatu. I tried to fight them but all my efforts were futile. My loud calls for help fell on deaf ears,” said Austin.

There were also reports of stolen motorbikes. Motorists claim loss of more than seven motorbikes from the area. According to one of them, sedatives are used on them, which eventually make them unconscious and by the time they gain conscious, they realize their motorbikes are already gone.

They also come as usual customers asking the motorists to drop them at particular destinations but in the middle of the journey they turn against them by beating them up and ride off with the motorbikes leaving them injured and selfless.

Residents complain there is no security at all and this is exposing their lives to danger. The women are at a greater risk because they are believed to be weak at defending themselves as compared to men who experience fewer attacks from these unknown attackers.

They are also afraid of carrying out businesses at early hours because they fear being attacked considering it as their only source of income as it is their small businesses that feed their families.
