Residents of Shaurimoyo Estate in Kisumu County have appealed to the government and the responsible authorities to speed up the construction of the new housing units in the area.
The residents say that they are currently living in houses whose conditions are not very pleasing. They say the concrete on the walls of their houses sometimes come off when there are heavy showers.
James Khaenje who has lived in the estate for 22 years says the roofs of the houses leak, therefore, making them put containers on the tables and chairs to trap the rain water when it rains, a practice which he says has cost him too much.
''I always feel ashamed when I invite my friend then it suddenly begins to rain. I would then tell the friend to sit at a particular point in the house because there are other parts which are leaking,'' said Khaenje.
He added that it becomes difficult to sleep at night when it is raining.
''The rain water gets on the bed too. I am forced to cover it with polyethene before I can get back to sleep. It is even worse when I am not in the house,'' said Khaenje.
Esther Obura who has also lived in the same estate for over 15 years says that the houses pose a risk to those who live in them. She says that the paint on the walls inside the houses has come out making it look ugly and difficult to repaint. Obura added that the windows have broken glass which lets in a lot of dust into the houses.
Attempts to get comments about the progress of the construction from the housing department went unanswered.
