Parents of a Secondary School in Endebes, Trans Nzoia County are a worried lot after 16 girls dropped out of school and took off to Uganda.
The students from Matumbei School are said to have eloped with their lovers after being impregnated.
Reliable information from the locals claims that men in the area have a habit of impregnating students then elope with them to Uganda to evade arrest.
“They disappear together with the girls to Uganda because it's just nearby. Others escape to different regions within the country where they cannot be arrested,” stated one parent.
Endebes Deputy County Commissioner Peter Maina said a section of parents were, however, frustrating the government's effort to tackle the menace by accepting payments from their daughter's lovers.
“The sad part is that parents are being paid for their silence therefore, security officers aren't receiving proper information,” stated Maina.
A recent report on the growing menace identified bodaboda operators as the most notorious suspects in propagating the vice.
