Two other soldiers sustain serious injuries when the vehicle they were travelling in ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

Security officials have said that the vehicle was in a convoy on patrol when it ran over the explosive device planted by suspected Al-Shabaab militants.

A military official who spoke on condition of anonymity said the IED tore apart the vehicle, killing the soldiers instantly.

The military official confirmed that seven KDF soldiers were killed during the Sunday evening attack and two others were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The Kenyan soldiers were reportedly headed to a military base in Dhobley in Somalia’s Lower Juba region after finishing their patrol when the attack occurred.

“The IED tore apart the vehicle, killing the soldiers instantly. Two survived the attack but they were seriously injured,” said the official as quoted by Capital FM.

Just last week, four people were killed in Mandera in what the authorities believe it was an Al Shabaab attack.
