Shock and disbelief engulfed Esise village on Monday when eight-years-old child drowned in a family well while trying to fetch water.
Winfred Ongoi, a class two pupil at Esise primary school died a few hours after he had reported home for lunch.
Evans Nyamwaka a neighbor said that he heard a loud bang and suspected something was a miss.
"I just suspected the bang had come from the well,” said Nyamwaka.
Efforts to rescue the boy were futile since there was a lot of warmth in the well, making it impossible for human life inside.
“We would have saved his life since at that time he was kicking. However, it was too hot inside hence impossible for us. He perished while inside,” said Nyamwaka.
John Ondieki said that there was some utensils outside the house meaning he had a plan to wash them.
“It is his norm to do the dishes after lunch,” noted Ondieki a neighbor.
By the time the tragic incident was taking place, no one was in the compound since his other two elder siblings are in a nearby boarding school while the mother had travelled to Kisii town.
Area chief John Ogeta confirmed the incident and urged parents to desist from exposing young ones to such dangers while the deceased body was taken to Nyansiongo Level 3 morgue.
“It is unfortunate that we lost a life simply out of ignorance. Parents should ensure their children are safe,” said Ogeta.
