Duale said that the culprits, according to Shariah law, ought to be stoned to death.

''Islam honors and protects women. Women are more respected in Islam than in any other religion. If we follow the teachings of Islam, those who rape women should be stoned to death,'' Duale said.

Duale spoke over the weekend on the matter amid a public hue and cry.

The teenager is still undergoing treatment after her harrowing ordeal in the hands of a gang of rapists.

A section of Kenyans has reacted with shock, saying that Duale's call is unconstitutional.
