A highly-critical statement signed by Linus Kaikai, the chairman of the Editors Guild of Kenya, went viral yesterday and triggered huge debate on social media.

Linus Kaikai had said in no uncertain terms that a meeting that took place at State House was aimed at muzzling the media.

Another statement written by the vice-chairman of the guild, Sam Maina, has been sent out a point by point counteraction of Linus Kaikai's statement.

The statement by the vice-chairman said that Linus Kaikai was speaking in his personal capacity and that his views did not represent those of the Editors Guild of Kenya.

Harrison Gaya, one of the personalities who attended the Friday State House meeting, hit out at Kaikai for misrepresentation of facts.

''It is very unfortunate that a journalist of Linus Kaikai's calibre is misrepresenting facts. He is speaking in his personal capacity and not as the chairman of the Editors Guild,'' Mr. Gaya said.

The two statements illustrate the divisions in the Kenyan media that pundits have warned could put media freedom into jeopardy.
