Confirming the incident, North Eastern Regional Commander Mohamud Saleh said that an unknown number of Al Shabaab militants attacked the quarry.

Mr Saleh said an investigation into the incident has been launched and that the security team is in pursuit of the suspects behind the attack.

“Early this morning we received reports that there was an attack at the quarry in Mandera. Four quarry workers were killed during the attack and we are pursuing the attackers,” said Mr Saleh.

National Police Spokesman Charles Owino who also confirmed the killings said the four were businessmen at the quarry.

“The four who were killed were businessmen who were located at the quarry and when the locals got wind of an imminent attack, they opted to remain in the area,” said Mr Owino.

“The attack was targeting nonlocals and all those who died are not from here. It is a similar attack like those in the past when quarry workers were targeted. There was word around about an impending attack but no one knew exactly where. Security was beefed up but it is unfortunate they still managed to penetrate,” said a senior officer as quoted by Capital FM.
