A man was charged with attempted suicide after he jumped off from MV Nyayo into the Indian Ocean on May 31, in Likoni.
Benson Muigai who attempted to drown himself in the India Ocean told a Mombasa court that he had been sent by God.
Muigai who hailed from Kiambu, shocked the court after claiming he was a servant of God, and had been sent to Mombasa particularly to take his life at the Likoni Ferry channel.
According to the prosecution, the suspect jumped off the ferry at around 8.45am. Luckily, he was rescued by fishermen.
“I am a servant of God. I came from Kiambu after God told me to come here to take my life in Indian Ocean. I am new in Mombasa, so I do not know of any other place I would have gone except Likoni Ferry,” said the man who was aged 30 during the hearing of the case.
The magistrate repeatedly asked him if he had really been sent by God, and what his mission involved.
“Is it true that God sent you here? What did He ask you to do?” State prosecutor Rosemary Nandi asked the accused.
The magistrate further directed that Muigai be subjected to psychiatrist check-up to verify his mental status before facing trial.
“The accused’s statements raise concerns about his mental status and he ought to be taken for check-up,” said Nandi.
The case was scheduled for mentioning on August 12.
