Mourners in Mbondoni village, Mwingi, were treated to a moment of disbelief and shock after a one-month-old infant came back to life a few minutes before its scheduled burial.
The ceremony was instantly cut short after the baby, who allegedly passed on three days ago following a sudden sickness, coughed when it was being dressed for the final interment last Saturday.
The women who were sent to dress the body discovered a change of the body's temperature.
A section of mourners fled the scene after learning that the baby had resurrected.
According to Major Mwenga, a relative, all preparations for the burial had been made after the child was confirmed dead.
The infant's grave was also ready.
"After the baby girl regained life, we rushed her to a nearby hospital. We have already informed the authorities about the same," he said.
He added that they had to instead bury a banana trunk in the open grave in line with the Akamba traditions.
