Farmers in Uasin Gishu have criticized the government for supplying subsided CAN fertilizers to the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) instead of DAP to farmers.
CAN is used for top dressing while currently, farmers are in dire need of DAP which they use for planting.
Led by the Kenya Farmers Association (KFA) Uasin Gishu branch director Kipkorir Menjo, the farmer termed the move as uncalled for and which is meant to frustrate farmers during this planting season.
"As farmers from this region, we are really disappointed with the Ministry of Agriculture for supplying CAN fertilizers which are meant for top dressing to farmers. How do they want us to plant our crops?" said Menjo in Eldoret town, Monday.
"I call upon the government to supply more subsidized DAP fertilizers before things get out of hands. If the government wants the country to be food secure farmers should be given first priority," he added.
Menjo further asked the government to ensure that they buy all maize from farmers.
"We want the National government to at least set aside sh10 billion through a supplementary budget to pay farmers their dues and also buy more maize from farmers," noted the KFA Director.
