A family in Kisauni, Mombasa county was forced to cancel a burial ceremony of its kin following a land dispute.
The ceremony had just commenced at Kashani village when police officers stormed the compound with a court order to stop the exercise which would have seen the body of 34-year-old Edward Mwambui, laid to rest.
Angry mourners clashed with police officers demanding an explanation as to why they would halt a burial ceremony by taking the body back to the morgue at the Coast General Hospital.
Reports said the deceased, a father of four, bought the land in 2014 a Mombasa businesswoman, from Josephine Toleat at Sh1.7 million but only transacted half of the amount.
"My brother was unable to complete the remaining Sh700,000 after he was fired from Kenya Ports Authority as a clerk. He bought this land in 2014 and they agreed with the buyer to pay Sh1 million and then repay the remaining slowly but since he could not be able to pay the owner of the land moved to court,” said Josephine Hongo, a sister to the deceased.
A court order issued from a Mombasa court said that Mwambui's mother - Prisca Kavua, had trespassed on the plot after Tole filed a case claiming ownership of the plot no 232.
