A confusing scenario ensued last week during the burial of a chief in Nyabise area of Nyamache Sub-county, Kisii County.
On the burial day, the young men who were digging his grave are said to have abandoned the process, and instead went to join the rest of the mourners in the tents.
They are said to have dug a single foot by the time they abandoned it, with many saying the departed chief was a nuisance during his working days.
The young men then proceeded to the dais and started to insult one of the area administration leaders, who had promised to punish them for various offenses.
The youths are said to have earlier raided a school, where they wanted to kick out a teacher that is when the chief and other leaders intervened and forwarded the names of the ringleaders to the current chief.
Their move to down the spades at the graveside was seen as a blackmail act, as they pushed for their names to be scrapped off the books of the leaders.
The clergy intervened to have the young men finish the grave first and for the chief to be laid to rest, but they could hear none of it.
The pastor who was conducting the process then requested other men including teachers and other mourners to help in digging up another grave, which they obliged and he prayed upon it.
The chief was later laid to rest, but the debacle remained on many of the residents’ lips for days.
